Girl dies on helicopter amid migrant rescue mission
A five-year-old girl has died during a helicopter flight to hospital after being rescued from a boat sailing off Spain’s Canary Islands in the Atlantic.
She died of cardiac arrest but a woman and a man also facing medical emergencies survived the trip.
The three were among 36 African migrants whose vessel was rescued by a merchant ship 200 nautical miles south of Tenerife; one passenger was already dead at the time.
Earlier it emerged in the Mediterranean that at least seven migrants died when their boat capsized near the Italian island of Lampedusa.
Nine are believed missing while hundreds more from several boats were either rescued or landed.
Attempts to reach the Canaries from north-west Africa have become more frequent as patrols in the Mediterranean have been stepped up.
