Guinea coup: ‘We have not come to joke’

Col Mahamady Doumbouya addressed Guineans on state TV on Sunday explaining the reasons behind overthrowing President Alpha Condé:Quote Message: Fellow countrymen, the social and economic situation of the country, the dysfunction of the republic’s institutions, the instrumentalisation of the justice system, the disregard of the people’s rights, the disrespect of the democratic values, the constant politicisation of the public administration, poverty and endemic corruption has led Guinea’s republican army, through the National Committee for Rally and Development, to take responsibility towards the people of Guinea.

Col Doumbouya also went on to quote Ghana’s former president and coup leader Jerry Rawlings:Quote Message: If the people are crushed by their elites, it is up to the army to give the people their freedom.”
